Meet the team: Nigel Close

Get to know the people working hard for you and helping to bring your projects to life in our Meet Team Alliance series.

In this instalment, we meet Nigel Close, who manages our Fareham branch. To find out more about him, his experience and what he brings to the Alliance team, keep reading.

How did you end up in your current role at Alliance Tool Hire?

After 18 years working for another tool hire company, I’d had enough! I knew Mark, the Managing Director, as I had worked with him before, and he offered me a job at Alliance Tool Hire.

What’s your favourite part about your job?

Getting the job done, making the customers happy, making sure all our kit gets out on time.

What does a typical working day look like for you?

Early to rise, I get up at 5.30am, walk my little dog Doris, a miniature schnauzer. When I get home I make my wife a nice cup of coffee in bed before heading off to work. At the depot, I catch up with customers and the team, have some banter, and then the rest of the day is spent making sure equipment and tools are sent out, the guys all know where they’re off to and answering calls and requests that come into the depot.

Go-to takeaway order?

Depends on how I’m feeling! Either, Chinese (Chow Mein, Egg fried rice, chicken balls with satay sauce) Indian (Korma, Onion Bhajis and Popadoms) or a meat feast pizza.

What’s your favourite tool?

Disc Cutter – Stihl

What does a perfect Saturday night look like for you?

Once of the above takeaways – bottle of wine, red or white, I’m a seasonal drinker, so white in the summer and red in the winter. Then the three of us (my wife and my dog) cosy up on the settee for the evening.

If you could invite anyone to dinner, who would it be and why?

I’m a rugby man so it would be Richie McCaw who is a retired New Zealand All Blacks No7 professional rugby player. Best rugby player in the world. I’d have a good old chat with him and I think he would be a good laugh.

What are your proudest achievements in your professional and personal life?

Personal: Meeting my wife Gail.

Professional: Being an auditor up in Scotland for another tool hire company. I enjoyed auditing all the depots, finding problems and telling the managers where they were going wrong.

Tell us three things about your role that you want your customers to know

I’m friendly, try to help the best you can and I love the banter. Too old to be too serious and life’s too short!

Describe Alliance Tool Hire in three words.

Welcoming, good to work for, look after you.
