Why You Need to Use a Signal Generator (Genny) with a CAT

Using a Signal Generator (Genny) with your Cable Avoidance Tool (CAT) ensures safety and accuracy when breaking ground, allowing you to:

  • Find plastic pipes, fibre and routes of service – strikes can mean delays and repair costs
  • Detect all live cables – strikes can result in serious injury or fatality

Issues With Using CATs Alone

Power Mode

Detects live electrical cables by picking up magnetic fields when power is being drawn

Radio Mode

Picks up long, metallic utilities e.g. old comms cables or large metal pipes

Avoidance Mode

Combines all CAT modes

Won’t pick up balanced High and Low Voltage cables, which generate little signal
Won’t detect plastic pipes, gas or water mains, or fibre optics
Limited to passive signals, what’s already “leaking” into the ground

Benefits of Signal Generators

When used with a CAT, a Genny actively sends a detectable signal along a cable or pipe, dramatically increasing the accuracy and range of what you can locate.

Induction Mode

Sends a signal into nearby metal pipes and cables that is detectable by the CAT up to 3 metres deep

Direct Connection Mode

Provides a strong, clean signal through a known cable or pipe

Ideal when cable entry points are unknown
Perfect for tracing pipe routes and identifying comms cables from visible access points

Avoiding common errors

The following measures are essential for effective use:

  • Keep the CAT and Genny at least 10 metres apart so the CAT detects underground signals only
  • Hold the earth stake is at 90 degrees to the Signal Generator
  • Hold the CAT vertically at all times

Helpful accessories

  • Sonde (Mouse): Battery-powered device that emits a signal – trace buried ducts or pipes using the C.A.T. in Genny mode.
  • Flexi Trace: A traceable rod for locating plastic drains or ducts that can’t carry a signal.
  • Cable Clamp: Clamps onto live cables to apply a safe and detectable signal.
  • Property Connector: Sends a traceable signal through internal wiring.
